FORT McMURRAY — A 39-year-old woman is facing firearms charges after Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a report of a person carrying a shotgun and ammunition in Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.
Police were called around 8:41 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a woman attempting to enter a residence on Larocque Avenue while carrying the firearm and ammunition.
RCMP established containment in the area with assistance from Police Dog Services and a remotely piloted aircraft system.
The woman was located at a nearby residence and arrested without incident. Police say the firearm and ammunition involved were found and seized.
No injuries or property damage were reported.
The woman, a resident of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, is charged with two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, two counts of careless use of a firearm and possession of a firearm for a dangerous purpose.
RCMP say the suspect cannot be identified until an Information is sworn. She remains in custody pending a judicial interim release hearing.
Police remained at the scene Thursday as the investigation continued.
RCMP say there is no ongoing concern for public safety and are encouraging residents to promptly report suspicious activity to police.
