FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP are warning residents after officers responded to six suspected drug overdoses in the community since July 18.
Police say officers administered naloxone, also known as Narcan, in each of the six separate incidents. The individuals were then transported for medical assistance and further assessment.
RCMP did not identify the substance or substances suspected in the overdoses.
“We are urging anyone who uses illegal substances to exercise extreme caution,” said Insp. Troy Switzer, acting officer in charge of Wood Buffalo RCMP.
“A single use can have fatal consequences. Our priority is the safety and well-being of our community, and we encourage residents to be aware of the risks and seek help when needed.”
Police are reminding residents of signs associated with an overdose, including slow or irregular breathing, difficulty waking a person, blue or grey lips and fingernails, pinpoint pupils and unresponsiveness.
Anyone who suspects an overdose is urged to call 911 immediately, administer naloxone if available and remain with the person until emergency responders arrive.
RCMP are also asking anyone with information about illegal drug trafficking to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4000 or 310-RCMP. Anonymous information can be provided through Crime Stoppers.
Support is available for people struggling with substance use through Alberta’s Virtual Opioid Dependency Program. Information about opioid dependency, treatment and other supports is also available through the addiction helpline at 1-866-332-2322.
