Danielle Smith address audience in Fort McMurray
EDMONTON — Alberta will host hundreds of delegates from Canada and the United States this week as the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region holds its 2026 Annual Summit in Edmonton.
The conference begins in two days and will bring together policymakers, business leaders and innovators from across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest to discuss trade, energy, transportation and economic development.
This year’s theme is “Gateway to Growth: Advancing Cross-Border Cooperation, Trade and Innovation.”
Premier Danielle Smith said the summit comes at a time when Canada is looking to strengthen its economy and expand international trade opportunities.
Smith said Alberta’s relationship with U.S. member states of the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region generated more than $18 billion in bilateral trade last year.
She said discussions during the summit will focus on strengthening trade corridors, advancing energy development, encouraging innovation and building resilient resource-based economies.
Smith also said Edmonton provides an appropriate venue because of its growing reputation as a centre for innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Pacific NorthWest Economic Region is a non-partisan public-private partnership that brings together western Canadian provinces and U.S. states to promote regional cooperation on shared economic and policy priorities.
