EDMONTON — Applications are open for Alberta’s new $100 Energy Rebate, although some Albertans are reporting technical difficulties and frustration while attempting to use the province’s online application portal.
The one-time rebate became available July 1 and is intended to help eligible Albertans with the rising cost of fuel, groceries, utilities and other household expenses.
Applications will remain open until Sept. 30.
The provincial government estimates nearly 3.4 million Albertans are eligible for the rebate, which replaced fuel tax relief scheduled to take effect July 1 under Alberta’s quarterly fuel tax adjustment program.
Premier Danielle Smith announced the change in June, with the province saying the $100 payment provides the average Albertan with more than 50 per cent greater savings than three months of fuel tax relief.
Eligible adults living in the same household who are not married or in a common-law relationship are considered separate households and must apply individually. Married and common-law partners must also apply separately, meaning an eligible two-adult household could receive a combined $200.
To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, be an Alberta resident with a verified Alberta.ca account, have filed a 2025 income tax return and have a household income of $225,000 or less.
Albertans receiving the Alberta Seniors Benefit, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped, Alberta Disability Assistance Program or Income Support as of July 1 are automatically enrolled and do not need to apply.
However, some Albertans attempting to access the rebate have reported website crashes, difficulties navigating the application process and having to repeat portions of their applications multiple times.
Smith has acknowledged she is aware of problems with the application process and says the province is working to resolve the issues and ensure the system is easy to use for Albertans.
Finance Minister Jason Nixon said direct payments allow recipients to decide where the financial assistance is needed most.
“The Alberta Energy Rebate goes beyond fuel costs. It’s about making sure more Albertans are receiving the right supports, when and where they need them most,” Nixon said.
Eligible applicants are expected to receive the non-taxable payment by Interac e-transfer within 14 days of applying.
Applicants must use a verified Alberta.ca account and ensure the mailing address on their Alberta driver’s licence or identification card matches the information associated with their account.
The province says the rebate will not affect eligibility for provincial or federal benefits.
