FORT McMURRAY — A 36-year-old man is facing multiple firearms, weapons and drug trafficking charges after Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to reports of gunfire at Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.
Police say officers were called to the community south of Fort McMurray around 7:47 a.m. on June 27 after a man reported being shot at. The victim was not injured and knew the suspect.
RCMP located the suspect at a residence in the community and arrested him without incident.
Police executed a search warrant at the residence around 8:30 p.m. the same day.
RCMP say officers seized a rifle, two imitation firearms, ammunition, spent ammunition casings, two machetes, nunchucks, bear spray and 45.6 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
Police also seized drug paraphernalia and $1,690 in cash.
Maurice Janvier, 36, of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, is charged with uttering threats, assault with a weapon, unlawfully discharging a firearm, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and multiple firearms offences.
He also faces charges of possessing weapons contrary to a court order and four counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
Janvier was remanded into custody following a judicial interim release hearing and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on July 6.
