FORT McMURRAY — Wildfire danger has fallen to low or moderate levels across much of northern Alberta after heavy rainfall soaked the region and caused localized flooding in Fort McMurray.
Alberta’s fire danger forecast shows reduced wildfire risk throughout much of the province’s north, including the Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche forest areas.
Alberta Wildfire says fires can still ignite under current conditions, but are not expected to spread into deeper vegetation layers or larger fuels such as trees. Creeping or gentle surface fires remain possible in some areas.
The Lac La Biche Forest Area, which includes Janvier and Conklin, says recent rainfall has reduced the wildfire danger to low.
“The wildfire danger across the Lac La Biche Forest Area is low. Recent rain has helped reduce wildfire risk. Wildfires can still start in cool, damp conditions. Be cautious if you’re spending time outdoors and do your part to prevent wildfires.”
The declining fire danger follows intense rainfall in Fort McMurray, where storm drains became overwhelmed in parts of downtown and localized flooding was reported.
Some residents made light of the conditions by taking canoes onto flooded streets.
Keyano College temporarily restricted public access to its campus over the weekend because of heavy rainfall and localized flooding.
“Due to heavy rainfall our campus is closed unless it’s for classes.
“We are encouraging the public to not come to campus due to some localized flooding. Both the Theatre and SSWC are closed until 4 PM, we will provide an update then.
“Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Stay safe and dry!”
Canada Weather Stats says more than 43 centimetres of rain fell in the Fort McMurray area between July 2 and July 4.
The rainfall came as wildfire danger ratings across much of northern Alberta were showing low to moderate hazard.
Despite the reduced risk, Alberta Wildfire says fires can still ignite, although they are not expected to spread into deeper vegetation layers or larger fuels such as trees. Creeping or gentle surface fires remain possible in some areas.
Environment Canada is forecasting hot and sunny weather for Fort McMurray and the surrounding area through Wednesday.
