FORT CHIPEWYAN — Mikisew Cree First Nation will be holding a runoff election after its general election resulted in a tie for the final seat on council.
The runoff vote is scheduled for July 3 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will determine whether Lawrence Noel Courteoreille or Eddie James McDonald fills the remaining council position.
Voting stations will be set up in Fort Chipewyan, Fort McMurray, Edmonton, High Level and Fort Smith, N.W.T.
The runoff follows the First Nation’s recent general election, which saw Melody Lepine elected chief alongside councillors Paul Tuccaro, Shirley Dunning, Sandra Antoine, Kevin Courteoreille and Jocelyn Marten.
Election officials previously said a process would be required to break the tie before the final council seat could be filled.
Mikisew Cree First Nation, based in Fort Chipewyan, is one of the largest Indigenous communities in northeastern Alberta.
Election officials say only the two tied candidates are eligible to participate in the runoff under the Mikisew Cree First Nation Election Regulations. The results will complete the nation’s new council.
