FORT McMURRAY — Six playgrounds across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will receive upgrades this summer as the municipality replaces aging equipment and improves accessibility at parks in Fort McMurray, Anzac and Conklin.
Construction will take place at St. Anne’s Park, Westview Park, the Frank LaCroix playground in Beacon Hill, Syncrude Athletic Park, Anzac Community School and the Conklin Multiplex.
The municipality says the work will focus on replacing aging playground equipment and surfacing while improving safety, accessibility and long-term durability. The Beacon Hill and Syncrude Athletic Park playgrounds will receive accessible play equipment and rubber safety surfacing designed for children of all abilities.
St. Anne’s Park will also receive drainage and site improvements, while Westview Park will undergo a partial playground replacement to modernize existing equipment. Anzac Community School will receive new play features and improved surfacing, while the Conklin Multiplex project will replace the existing playground surface.
“Playgrounds are more than places to play. They’re spaces where children build confidence, friendships are formed and families come together,” Erin Judge, manager of project delivery and facility services, said in a statement.
“These improvements will help create safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for children of all abilities for years to come.”
Construction will continue through the summer. Residents can expect temporary playground closures, construction fencing, increased contractor activity and occasional pathway or sidewalk disruptions near work sites.
The municipality is reminding residents to stay clear of active construction areas, follow posted signage and keep children out of fenced work zones while construction is underway.
