FORT CHIPEWYAN — Melody Lepine has officially taken office as chief of the Mikisew Cree First Nation following the nation’s recent election.
Lepine assumes leadership alongside newly elected councillors Paul Tuccaro, Shirley Dunning, Sandra Antoine, Kevin Courtoreille and Jocelyn Marten.
A tie remains for one council position between Lawrence Courtoreille and Eddie McDonald.
Officials say the process for resolving the tie has not yet been determined, with a final outcome expected in the coming weeks.
Community members have also recognized all candidates who sought office in the election, noting the commitment required to serve their nation through elected leadership. Particular recognition was given to several younger candidates who ran for office for the first time.
Mikisew Cree First Nation, based in Fort Chipewyan, is one of the largest Indigenous communities in northeastern Alberta.
