FORT McMURRAY — An overdue boater reported missing on the Clearwater River was found safe Friday afternoon after experiencing mechanical problems with his vessel, prompting a multi-agency search involving police, volunteers and an emergency helicopter crew.
Wood Buffalo RCMP said officers responded at about 9:45 a.m. June 13 after receiving reports of a boater who had not been heard from since approximately 4 p.m. the previous day.
The search involved RCMP officers, police remotely piloted aircraft systems, Fort McMurray Search and Rescue and HERO Air Rescue.
The boater was located safely at about 2:15 p.m.
Police said mechanical issues with the boat were responsible for the delay.
According to HERO Air Rescue, crews worked alongside RCMP to search portions of the Clearwater River using information provided by family members and friends about possible travel routes.
In a social media post following the rescue, HERO said the incident served as a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change on the water.
“This call is a good reminder of how quickly circumstances can change on the water and how valuable an emergency medevac helicopter can be when time, distance, and access are critical,” the organization said.
The successful outcome comes as boating activity increases across the region with the arrival of warmer weather.
Wood Buffalo RCMP is encouraging boaters to wear approved life-jackets or personal flotation devices, ensure vessels are mechanically sound and carry required safety equipment before heading onto local waterways.
Police also recommend filing a trip plan with someone on shore, carrying reliable communications equipment and checking weather conditions before departure.
RCMP noted cold-water conditions remain a hazard even during warmer weather and reminded operators of powered recreational vessels to carry proof of competency, such as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
“Responsible boating reduces strain on emergency services and search and rescue teams,” RCMP said in a boating safety advisory issued following the incident.
No injuries were reported.
