FORT McMURRAY — A Winners/HomeSense store is coming to Fort McMurray, marking the first location for the retail brands in the region and adding another major tenant to the growing Parsons Creek Town Centre development.
Developer Allard Developments announced Tuesday the combined store will occupy approximately 42,500 square feet within the retail complex in the city’s north end. The company said it will be the only Winners/HomeSense location serving the region.
The announcement follows plans for a new Walmart Supercentre at Parsons Creek Town Centre, which will relocate the retailer’s existing Fort McMurray store and serve as another anchor tenant for the development.
Paul Allard of Allard Developments said securing Winners/HomeSense is another milestone for the project and reflects confidence in the local market.
The Parsons Creek development is planned to accommodate up to 500,000 square feet of retail space when fully built and is intended to serve both Fort McMurray and the broader northern Alberta market.
According to the developer, the site is located within Fort McMurray’s northern growth corridor and serves neighbourhoods representing more than 70 per cent of the city’s residential population. The project is also intended to capture consumer spending that has traditionally left the region for larger urban centres.
Lisa Sweet, chief executive officer of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development and Tourism, said Winners and HomeSense were among the most requested retailers identified by residents in community surveys conducted in 2021 and 2023. She said the investment is expected to create jobs, expand shopping options and help retain spending within the region.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has a population of more than 107,000 residents and more than $2.3 billion in annual retail spending potential, according to information released with the announcement.
Construction schedules and opening dates for the Winners/HomeSense store have not yet been announced.
