FORT McMURRAY — Alberta Wildfire officials are warning residents to exercise caution outdoors as high wildfire danger conditions persist across the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Officials say warmer temperatures have increased the fire danger rating, creating conditions where wildfires can start easily and spread quickly.
Despite the elevated risk, there are currently no active wildfires in the forest area.
Since Jan. 1, crews have responded to 25 wildfires in the region.112
Alberta Wildfire is encouraging residents to take a wildfire safety pledge aimed at reducing the risk of human-caused fires. The pledge includes commitments to use fire responsibly, properly extinguish campfires, inspect off-highway vehicles for debris and report smoke sightings to authorities.
The campaign includes a draw for an educational helicopter flight and is being promoted by Fort McMurray Fire Chief Jody Butz and Fort McMurray Forest Area manager Paul St. John.
Wildfire officials are also reminding off-highway vehicle users to regularly remove built-up debris from machines, carry basic firefighting equipment and ensure spark arrestors and mufflers are functioning properly.
Campfire users are urged never to leave fires unattended and to fully extinguish them by soaking, stirring and soaking them again until the ashes and coals are cool to the touch.
Alberta Wildfire says many wildfires are caused by human activity and can be prevented through safe outdoor practices.
