FORT McMURRAY — Residents of Conklin are set to celebrate a new policing arrangement this week which will see RCMP officers stationed in the community on a regular basis.
The Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee says the agreement is intended to improve public safety and strengthen relationships between police and residents in the northern hamlet.
Under the arrangement, RCMP officers will operate from space provided by the advisory committee in Conklin, giving the community a local police presence and potentially reducing response times for incidents.
Community leaders say crime and public safety concerns have long been a challenge for many remote northern communities, where large distances can delay police response and limit opportunities for residents to interact with officers.
A public celebration marking the new arrangement is scheduled for Wednesday at the Conklin Multiplex.
The event is expected to bring together residents, community leaders and RCMP representatives to formally recognize the agreement.
Several RCMP officers and officials are expected to attend, including members involved in police dog training programs. An RCMP drone operator is also expected to provide demonstrations during the event.
Organizers say the gathering will give residents an opportunity to meet local officers, learn more about policing resources and build stronger relationships with law enforcement.
The Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee described the arrangement as a significant step toward improving safety and quality of life in the community.
Speaking is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and community activities.
Conklin is located about 160 kilometres south of Fort McMurray along Highway 881.
