Construction season is officially underway across the region as the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo rolls out a slate of major infrastructure and community projects for 2026.
Officials say this year’s work continues progress on long-term capital projects while also introducing new upgrades focused on families, recreation, and community spaces.
Key projects this season include ongoing flood mitigation work along the waterfront trail network, Waterways, TaigaNova, and key intersections like Hardin Street and Clearwater Drive. Planning is also moving forward on future flood protection phases for Downtown and surrounding areas.
At the same time, work is continuing on major community investments like Waterfront Park revitalization, which will bring new seating areas, landscaping, lighting, and improved access to the riverfront.
Another major project is the new inclusive playground at Syncrude Athletic Park, which will feature accessible equipment and rubberized surfacing designed for children of all abilities.
Looking ahead, construction continues on the Northside Twin Arena in Abrams Land, set to open in Fall 2026. The facility will feature two ice surfaces for hockey, skating, ringette, and more.
Residents in rural communities including Anzac, Conklin, Gregoire Lake Estates, Janvier, and Saprae Creek can also apply for water and sewer servicing connections as part of the Rural Water and Sewer Servicing program.
Officials are reminding residents to expect detours, delays, and temporary closures in construction zones throughout the season, especially around Waterfront Park and Hardin Street.
