Fire danger remains very high in the Fort McMurray Forest Area as warmer temperatures continue to increase the risk of wildfires starting and spreading quickly.
According to Alberta Wildfire, there have been 8 wildfires reported in the forest area since January 1, 2026. Officials are reminding residents that conditions are still very capable of producing fast-moving fires.
Residents are being urged to use extreme caution outdoors, and avoid any activities that could spark a wildfire. Current wildfire locations can be tracked using the wildfire status dashboard or the Alberta Wildfire Status app.
Hazard reduction burning has also been underway over the past few weeks as part of wildfire risk reduction efforts. Additional controlled burns are planned for the coming weeks in regions including Fort Chipewyan and Fort Smith, depending on weather conditions.
Officials are also highlighting off-highway vehicle safety as a key wildfire prevention step. Riders are being reminded to clean their machines regularly, remove debris buildup, ensure mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly, and carry basic firefighting tools like a shovel or fire extinguisher.
