There was a strong sense of reflection, resilience, and optimism inside SMS Equipment Place on Wednesday as local business leaders gathered for the annual luncheon hosted by the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce.
Much of the afternoon focused on the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, with federal Minister Eleanor Olszewski delivering remarks recognizing the lasting impact the disaster had on the region and the resilience shown by the community in the years since.
Speaking to attendees, Olszewski acknowledged the work of first responders, Indigenous leaders, volunteers, businesses, and residents who helped rebuild after more than 80-thousand people were forced from their homes during the wildfire.
The minister also announced a final federal disaster recovery payment to Alberta worth just over 78 million dollars through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program. The payment brings the total federal contribution connected to the 2016 wildfire recovery to more than 385 million dollars.
She noted the federal government continues working with communities across Canada to strengthen emergency preparedness and long-term disaster resilience as climate-related emergencies become more common.
Wednesday’s event also served as an opportunity for the local business community to reflect on how far the region has come over the past decade while looking ahead toward continued growth and recovery.
