Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Wood Buffalo say two people are facing charges following a shots fired investigation south of Fort McMurray early Saturday morning.
Police responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls around 3:18 a.m. reporting gunshots near the garbage dump in Chipewyan Prairie First Nation. Officers located a black Ford F-150 stuck in a field nearby and attempted a traffic stop. RCMP say the driver initially continued revving the engine and spinning the tires before eventually complying with police commands.
A man and woman were both arrested without incident. During a search of the truck, officers seized two loaded short-barrel pump action shotguns, ammunition, and illegal cigarettes. Police also say one of the firearms had a tampered serial number and spent ammunition was found near the driver’s side window.
Forty-year-old Tyrone Cardinal of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is facing multiple firearms-related charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm, and weapons possession contrary to court orders. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Fort McMurray on May 20.
A 39-year-old woman from Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is also facing several firearms charges. Her name has not been released as court documents have not yet been sworn. She was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court June 17.
RCMP are reminding residents to report suspicious activity as quickly as possible to help support investigations and community safety.
