FORT McMURRAY — Residents looking to get involved in gardening and community beautification projects this spring have several opportunities available through Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo programs.
Municipal officials say this year’s “Seed of the Year” campaign is focused on therapeutic gardening and features free sunflower seed packets available at multiple locations across the region.
The municipality says the sunflower seed mix is intended to encourage residents to connect with gardening and outdoor spaces while helping brighten neighbourhoods throughout the summer.
A full list of seed pickup locations is available through the municipality’s Communities in Bloom program.
Officials say the municipality’s community garden program also continues to see strong demand from residents interested in volunteering to plant and maintain shared garden spaces.
The municipality says all current community garden locations are fully subscribed and operating with waitlists, but residents are still encouraged to register for future opportunities.
For residents less interested in gardening, municipal officials are also encouraging participation in community cleanup initiatives aimed at keeping neighbourhoods clean throughout the summer months.
The municipality’s Community Cleanup Kickoff event, originally scheduled earlier this month, has been postponed to May 21 because of poor weather.
The event is now scheduled to run from noon until 1:30 p.m. at kiyām Community Park, where participants will receive cleanup supplies before heading into surrounding areas.
Officials say residents can also organize independent neighbourhood cleanups throughout the summer.
