EDMONTON — While youth unemployment remains elevated across parts of Canada, Alberta RCMP say the province is seeing increased interest from people applying to join the national police force.
The RCMP says the number of Alberta applicants has more than doubled compared with four years ago, although the force did not provide specific figures.
The increase comes as police agencies across Canada continue competing for recruits in a tight labour market and amid ongoing staffing pressures in some jurisdictions.
The RCMP recently announced an increase to its Cadet Recruitment Allowance for recruits attending Depot Division, the national RCMP training academy in Regina.
“We are pleased to announce an increase to the Cadet Recruitment Allowance,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“In a competitive labour market, the RCMP is enhancing its training allowance to ensure cadets are adequately supported throughout their training.”
The RCMP says cadets attending Depot continue to receive meals and accommodations, uniforms, training courses, insurance coverage and travel to and from the academy while in training.
“Cadets play an important role in building the future of our organization and this change helps recognize the time, effort and dedication they invest during their training period,” the statement said.
The RCMP has spent recent years attempting to strengthen recruitment efforts nationally as policing agencies face increased competition for workers and changing workforce expectations among younger Canadians.
Alberta RCMP recruiting officials declined to provide detailed application numbers but confirmed the province has seen a significant increase in applicants since 2022.
