Hockey Canada announced Thursday morning that Fort McMurray, Alberta will host the 2027 Centennial Cup, presented by Tim Hortons, Canada’s National Junior A Championship, taking place May 6th to 16th, 2027.
The tournament will bring together the top Junior A hockey teams from across the country as they compete for a national championship.
The Centennial Cup has a special history in Wood Buffalo. The event was previously held in Fort McMurray in 2000, when the Fort McMurray Oil Barons captured the national title on home ice.
The 2027 championship will mark the seventh time Alberta has hosted Canada’s National Junior A Championship, once again putting the province and the Wood Buffalo region in the national hockey spotlight.
Oil Barons President Andrew Boutilier says bringing the Centennial Cup back to the community is a major milestone for the organization and local hockey fans.
The event will also showcase the current Oil Barons program, led by Head Coach and General Manager Tom Keca, while giving players the opportunity to compete on one of the biggest stages in Junior A hockey.
Alberta Junior Hockey League Commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk says Wood Buffalo is an ideal location for the prestigious tournament.
“The Wood Buffalo Region possesses a unique passion and resilience that makes it an ideal stage for this prestigious event,” Bartoshyk said. “By bringing the Centennial Cup to Fort McMurray, we are not only showcasing the incredible talent of our Junior A athletes and the AJHL, but also highlighting the strength, hospitality and vibrant spirit of this remarkable community.”
The tournament is expected to bring teams, fans, and visitors from across Canada to Wood Buffalo, creating an opportunity to showcase the region on a national stage.
With the Centennial Cup returning more than two decades after the Oil Barons won the championship on home ice, excitement is already building for what promises to be a memorable event in 2027.
