EDMONTON — Alberta’s top young athletes are competing in Strathcona County as the 2026 Alberta Summer Games get underway, bringing thousands of participants and spectators to one of the province’s largest amateur sporting events.
More than 1,700 athletes aged 11 to 16 qualified through zone trials to compete in 13 sports from July 16 to 19. They are joined by about 600 coaches and technical officials, while an estimated 1,500 volunteers are supporting the event.
The provincial government is providing $1.275 million to help the host society cover transportation, food services, venues and promotion.
Tourism and Sport Minister Andrew Boitchenko said the Games give young athletes an opportunity to compete at a high level while representing their communities and building lasting connections.
The province estimates the event will generate about $3 million in direct economic activity for the Strathcona region through spending on hotels, restaurants, retail and local attractions.
The Alberta Summer Games have been held every two years since 1974 and have helped develop athletes who later represented Canada at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is scheduled to host the next Alberta Summer Games in 2028, bringing the provincial event to the Fort McMurray region.
