EDMONTON — Alberta RCMP are warning of an email scam in which people receive fraudulent summonses alleging offences related to child sexual abuse material in an attempt to trick recipients into responding.
Police say the emails falsely claim to be official court summonses issued by an RCMP officer and instruct recipients to click a link to contact the officer in charge.
The RCMP says the messages are fraudulent.
Police are reminding Albertans the RCMP does not issue summonses through unsolicited emails containing links requesting contact, personal information or payment.
Anyone who receives one of the emails is advised not to reply, click on links or open any attachments.
Instead, recipients should delete the message and report the scam to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
The RCMP says reporting fraudulent messages helps investigators track emerging scams and warn the public about new tactics used by fraudsters.
