EDMONTON — The Alberta government says 223 new classroom complexity teams will be added across the province as part of a $100-million investment aimed at supporting students and teachers.
The province has released allocations showing how many new teams each public, separate and francophone school authority will receive for the 2026-27 school year.
The government says $75 million will support the 223 teams, including 160 for grades 7 to 12 and 63 for kindergarten to Grade 6.
The remaining $25 million will be used to improve access to specialized supports in rural and remote communities and provide targeted training for educators dealing with increasingly complex classroom environments.
Classroom complexity teams provide school-based support for teachers responding to behavioural, learning and safety needs.
Every public, separate and francophone school authority will receive at least one additional team, while larger authorities will receive more based on enrolment and measures of classroom complexity.
The province initially announced 221 new teams, but says final allocation decisions allowed two additional teams to be added for grades 7 to 12.
The new teams build on an investment announced in February to support up to 476 teams in kindergarten to Grade 6 classrooms during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years.
The province says Budget 2026 includes $355 million to address class sizes and classroom complexity during the coming school year.
