FORT McMURRAY — Canada Day celebrations in Fort McMurray will feature two days of community events, including a parade, free concerts, fireworks, family activities and sporting events.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says festivities begin June 30 with a free community concert and fireworks display at MacDonald Island Park.
Canada Day events continue July 1, highlighted by the annual Canada Day Parade, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Main Street and Franklin Avenue before travelling south along Franklin Avenue and ending near Riedel Street and Clearwater Drive.
Municipal officials are encouraging residents to wear red, white and orange as part of the celebrations.
For those seeking a quieter experience, Main Street will serve as a sensory-friendly viewing area from 10:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. During that period, parade participants will turn off music and sirens.
Additional events on July 1 include a free pancake and bannock breakfast hosted by the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo at kiyām Community Park from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
MacDonald Island Park will also host free family programming throughout the day, including live entertainment, face painting and community activities.
The Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association is introducing a new Canada Day event this year, with soccer activities planned at Howard Pew Park and Syncrude Athletic Park. Programming will include games, skills competitions, obstacle courses and family activities.
Motorists are being advised to expect temporary road closures and traffic delays in downtown Fort McMurray during the parade. Several sections of Clearwater Drive, Main Street, Franklin Avenue and Riedel Street will be temporarily closed or subject to traffic restrictions.
Temporary transit detours will also be in place between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on July 1, affecting Routes 1 and 2.
The municipality says roadways will reopen as the parade passes and is encouraging residents to plan routes in advance.
A full schedule of Canada Day events is available through the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
