FORT McMURRAY — A Fort McMurray man is facing several charges after RCMP say a hit-and-run collision in the downtown area led to an impaired driving investigation.
Wood Buffalo RCMP received a report at about 4:13 p.m. on June 16 of a suspected impaired driver involved in a collision on Franklin Avenue.
Police say a white Chevrolet Equinox struck a grey Chevrolet Silverado before leaving the scene.
The suspect vehicle was later seen parking in the Peter Pond Mall parking lot, where a confrontation occurred between the two drivers. RCMP allege the driver of the Equinox then entered the mall.
Officers arrived and located the suspect inside the shopping centre, where he was arrested.
Gioacchino Mazzocca, 58, of Fort McMurray, has been charged with failure to stop after an accident, disobeying a court order, transporting liquor in an open container and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
Police said the accused also faces provincial sanctions related to the incident.
Mazzocca was held for a judicial interim release hearing before being released from custody.
He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on July 15.
RCMP are reminding residents to call 911 if they witness or suspect an impaired driver and encourage the public to report suspicious or criminal activity.
