FORT McMURRAY — Two drivers are facing court appearances after RCMP say they were caught street racing at more than double the posted speed limit in a Fort McMurray neighbourhood.
Wood Buffalo RCMP Municipal Traffic Services officers were patrolling the Timberlea area at about 1:12 a.m. on June 15 when they observed a black Ford Explorer and a grey Kawasaki motorcycle stopped at a red light at Confederation Way and Brett Drive.
Police allege both vehicles accelerated rapidly when the light turned green.
RCMP say the Ford Explorer was recorded travelling 114 kilometres per hour, while the motorcycle was clocked at 134 kilometres per hour in a 60 km/h zone.
Officers conducted traffic stops on both vehicles and issued summonses for speeding and racing.
Both vehicles were seized and towed.
The motorcycle driver is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Aug. 21, while the Explorer driver is set to appear on Aug. 28.
RCMP are reminding motorists that excessive speeding can result in mandatory court appearances, substantial fines, higher insurance costs and possible licence suspensions.
Police say speeding reduces reaction time and increases the severity of collisions, urging drivers to obey posted speed limits and adjust their speed to road and weather conditions.
