FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP are encouraging families to make helmet safety a priority as children and youth spend more time outdoors during the warmer months.
Police say wearing a properly fitted helmet remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious head injuries while riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades and other wheeled recreational equipment.
According to RCMP, head injuries can occur within seconds during a fall or collision, but helmets can significantly reduce the likelihood of severe injury.
Officers are urging parents and caregivers to ensure helmets fit correctly and are designed for the activity being undertaken.
A properly fitted helmet should sit level on the head, fit snugly and have straps forming a V-shape beneath the ears. The chin strap should be secure while still allowing room for two fingers between the strap and the chin.
In addition to wearing helmets, RCMP recommend children and adults wear bright or reflective clothing to improve visibility, particularly when riding near roads or in low-light conditions.
Police are also reminding riders to obey traffic laws, remain aware of their surroundings and replace helmets that have been damaged or involved in a crash.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say parents can play an important role in promoting safety by modelling good behaviour and wearing helmets themselves.
With bicycles, scooters and skateboards becoming increasingly popular as schools wind down for the summer, police say taking a few simple precautions can help prevent serious injuries and keep recreational activities safe for everyone.
RCMP are sharing helmet safety information throughout the season as part of broader efforts to promote injury prevention and public safety across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
