FORT McMURRAY — The Fort McMurray Public School Division has approved a new three-year education plan that will help shape student learning, school operations and board priorities through 2029.
Trustees approved the 2026-2029 School Education Plan during a special meeting May 27. The document will now be submitted to Alberta’s Minister of Education and Childcare before the province’s May 31 deadline.
School education plans serve as the primary accountability documents for Alberta school divisions, outlining priorities, goals and performance measures designed to improve student outcomes and guide decision-making across the education system.
The Fort McMurray Public School Division identified the plan as a key component of its “Success for All” priority, one of the board’s strategic focuses for the coming years.
While trustees did not publicly discuss specific targets in the board highlights package, education plans typically establish objectives related to student achievement, literacy and numeracy, student well-being, graduation rates, Indigenous education, career pathways and overall school performance.
Approval of the plan comes as school boards across Alberta finalize multi-year planning documents required by the provincial government. Those plans are used to measure performance and help guide future budget, staffing and programming decisions.
Trustees also approved the continued use of locally acquired courses at École McTavish High School, Westwood Community High School, Fort McMurray Composite High School and Frank Spragins High School beginning in the first semester of the 2025-26 school year.
Locally developed courses allow school divisions to offer programming tailored to local interests, workforce needs and educational opportunities not always available through the provincial curriculum.
The board also announced it has engaged a consultant to begin annual evaluations of both the superintendent and the board itself, a process linked to the division’s priority of maintaining safe and caring learning environments.
The next regular meeting of the Fort McMurray Public School Division board is scheduled for June 17.
My suggestion as a reporter would be to request the actual 2026-2029 School Education Plan. The real story is likely inside that document, particularly if there are measurable targets for literacy, numeracy, attendance, Indigenous achievement, graduation rates or student mental health. Those details would turn this from a routine governance story into a substantive education story.
