FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo Pride is preparing to celebrate a major milestone this summer as the organization marks the region’s 10th annual Pride Festival with a month-long lineup of more than 40 events across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Organizers say this year’s theme, “A Decade of Pride: Tens Across the Board,” celebrates a decade of building inclusive and welcoming spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ residents, families and allies throughout the region.
The theme draws inspiration from queer ballroom culture, a movement organizers say was created largely by Black and Brown queer and trans communities as spaces for creativity, self-expression and support during periods of exclusion and discrimination.
Wood Buffalo Pride executive director Mitchel Bowers said the organization is using the anniversary to both celebrate past progress and recognize the strength and diversity of the local community.
Bowers said Pride events are intended to create opportunities for residents to feel safe, connected and supported while also encouraging broader community participation and solidarity.
The festival officially begins May 31 with an opening ceremony and Pride flag raising at Kiyam Park in Fort McMurray.
The annual Pride Fair, one of the festival’s largest events, is scheduled for June 20 at Heritage Village. Organizers say the free family-friendly event will feature local vendors, entertainment, community organizations and activities aimed at bringing residents together in celebration.
Wood Buffalo Pride will also host its second annual Fort Chipewyan Pride Celebration on June 27 as part of ongoing efforts to expand Pride programming and visibility into rural and northern communities throughout the municipality.
Festival organizers say this year’s programming will include educational sessions, arts events, performances, family activities and community gatherings designed for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Wood Buffalo Pride says the festival has grown significantly over the past decade and now serves as one of the region’s largest annual celebrations focused on diversity, inclusion and community connection.
