FORT McMURRAY — There’s still plenty of time for organizations to register as part of the Canada Day Parade in Fort McMurray, with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo encouraging local groups, businesses and non-profits to take part in this year’s celebrations.
The municipality says registrations remain open until June 16 for parade floats and walking groups participating in the July 1 event.
The parade is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. along Franklin Avenue, starting at Main Street and ending at Riedel Street.
Municipal officials say the annual parade provides organizations with an opportunity to showcase their work, connect with residents and participate in one of the region’s largest community celebrations.
The municipality is also offering fundraising opportunities for eight local non-profit organizations through event support roles including barricade monitors, safety walkers and members of the “Swag Squad.”
Applications for fundraising roles also close June 16.
Organizers are encouraging residents to wear red, white or orange and gather along the parade route with family and friends.
A sensory-friendly portion of the parade will run from 10:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. along Main Street between Clearwater Drive and Franklin Avenue.
The municipality says Canada Day festivities will continue throughout the day with family activities, entertainment and community programming at locations including MacDonald Island Park, kiyām Community Park and the Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association.
The municipality also says this year’s celebrations will continue emphasizing reconciliation and Indigenous learning.
In promotional materials for the event, the municipality acknowledged Treaty 8 territory and encouraged residents to participate in reconciliation efforts through education, Indigenous cultural events and reading the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
