Western premiers are meeting in Alberta for their annual conference, with key issues expected on the agenda. Leaders from across Western Canada and the northern territories are gathering in Kananaskis for two days of talks.
Discussions will focus on business, regional relationships, and economic priorities.
One northern leader, Nunavut Premier John Main, will take part virtually in the discussions.
The meeting comes as Alberta considers a possible referendum on its place in Canada. A campaign to keep Alberta in Canada has been launched as debate over a possible referendum grows.
Former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk introduced the Forever Canadian campaign in Edmonton, where supporters gathered waving flags. Lukaszuk says he will travel across the province encouraging people to vote to remain in Canada. The campaign will include community visits, information sharing, and outreach efforts.
The launch comes as Alberta plans a referendum this fall on its future within Confederation.
