Airport Charity surrendered items sale
FORT McMURRAY — Hundreds of bargain hunters turned out at Fort McMurray International Airport this week as YMM’s popular Lost and Surrendered Items Sale returned, raising thousands of dollars for local autism support initiatives.
The two-day event, held May 13 and 14 inside the airport’s arrivals area, raised $2,725 for the Autism Society of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The sale featured a wide assortment of items left behind or surrendered by travellers during security screening, including luggage, electronics, clothing, tools, pocketknives and bags filled with confiscated lighters.
Airport officials said all items were available for a minimum $2 donation, with many residents arriving early to search for deals and unusual finds.
“This event is always a fun way to connect with the community while supporting an organization doing meaningful work in our region,” Cuyler Green, vice-president of operations and infrastructure with the Fort McMurray Airport Authority, said in a statement.
“It also serves as a helpful reminder for travellers to check CATSA regulations before heading to the airport and understand what items are not permitted through security screening.”
Green said the event helps prevent surrendered items from going to waste while giving them “a second life” in the community.
The Autism Society of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says proceeds from the fundraiser will help support inclusivity-focused initiatives and community programming for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families.
“We’re incredibly grateful to YMM and everyone who supported this year’s Lost & Surrendered Items Sale,” executive director Tina Delainey said in a statement.
“This partnership helps support more inclusive experiences in our community, and we’re excited to continue working together on future accessibility-focused initiatives at the airport.”
The airport authority says it is currently collaborating with the Autism Society on additional inclusivity initiatives at YMM, with further details expected to be announced later.
The Lost and Surrendered Items Sale is held approximately every three to four years and has become one of the airport’s most anticipated community events.
