FORT McMURRAY — A fire advisory for the Fort McMurray Forest Area has been lifted following recent rainfall and cooler weather conditions, although wildfire danger in the region remains high.
Alberta Wildfire officials say the wildfire danger remains high throughout the Fort McMurray Forest Area, while conditions north of Lake Athabasca are considered moderate.
Officials are still urging residents and outdoor recreation users to use caution with campfires and ensure all fires are fully extinguished before leaving an area.
The advisory was lifted Thursday morning after improved weather conditions reduced immediate wildfire concerns across the region.
Since the beginning of the year, four wildfires have been recorded within the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Alberta Wildfire continues reminding residents recreating outdoors to follow all fire bans and safe burning regulations while visiting public lands and forested areas.
Officials say campfires should only be built in approved fire rings or on hard surfaces where permitted and should never be left unattended.
The province is also reminding off-highway vehicle users to properly clear debris and hotspots from machines before travelling through dry vegetation.
Any burning within the Forest Protection Area requires a fire permit between March 1 and Oct. 31, except for campfires.
Fireworks and exploding targets also remain prohibited in the Forest Protection Area without written approval from a forest officer.
