FORT McMURRAY — Cold weather is keeping the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road open at full capacity, with officials saying the route remains accessible at its maximum weight limit of 45,000 kilograms.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says a late spring has helped preserve the road, but warns conditions are expected to deteriorate as temperatures rise.
Officials say weight restrictions will be introduced in stages as warmer weather sets in, with advance notice provided. As in previous years, daytime load limits are expected to follow, eventually restricting heavier vehicles, and later all traffic, to overnight travel to reduce wear on the road.
Drivers are being advised to prepare for rough conditions as spring-like temperatures begin to affect the surface. The municipality is urging caution, adherence to posted signage and allowing extra travel time.
The winter road, which connects Fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan, is also in the process of being officially renamed the Michael Cardinal Winter Road.
The change follows a recent council decision to honour Michael Cardinal, a member of the Delta Rough Riders who helped lead efforts to establish the route.
Municipal officials are reminding drivers to follow safety guidelines, including staying to the right, stopping at river crossings to allow one vehicle at a time and remaining alert for crews and equipment.
Heavy vehicles, including fuel trucks and semi-trailers, are required to obtain permits before using the road.
Residents are encouraged to monitor conditions through municipal updates, including the winter road hotline and online channels, as the season progresses.
