FORT McMURRAY — The Wood Buffalo Community Foundation says two prominent Métis leaders will be honoured next month during a fundraising event aimed at supporting Indigenous initiatives in the region.
The foundation announced its second annual Building Legacy, Building Community event will take place March 21 at SMS Equipment Place. The evening will celebrate the contributions of Hector “Mickey” Demers and Michael Cardinal, who organizers say helped shape the Wood Buffalo region through business leadership and community involvement.
Foundation chair Nicole Bourque-Bouchier says the event recognizes the lasting impact both men have had on the region and the example their leadership continues to set.
The event will also launch a $1-million corporate challenge to establish a permanent endowment fund in honour of Demers and Cardinal.
Two local companies have already pledged contributions toward the goal. Bouchier has committed $250,000 while A.P.E. Maintenance Ltd. has pledged $100,000.
Melanie Antoine, chief executive officer of A.P.E. Maintenance, says supporting the initiative will help ensure the legacy of community leadership and generosity associated with both men continues to benefit the region.
Organizers say corporations, organizations and community leaders are being invited to contribute to the endowment fund, which will support Indigenous initiatives in Wood Buffalo for years to come.
Tickets for the March event are now on sale through the Wood Buffalo Community Foundation website.
