FORT McMURRAY — Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development and Tourism has named Lisa Sweet as its permanent chief executive officer, marking what the organization says is a new chapter focused on long-term growth and regional opportunity.
The appointment follows 18 months in which Sweet served as interim CEO, a period the organization described as one of transition and renewed focus. The board said her leadership helped strengthen operations, governance and partnerships while positioning the organization for future success.
Sweet has spent 15 years working in economic development in the region and has led efforts tied to business retention, investment attraction, workforce development and tourism growth. The organization said her work has helped advance economic diversification and collaboration with industry, local businesses and Indigenous communities.
Mayor Sandy Bowman welcomed the appointment, saying Sweet has demonstrated strong leadership and a deep commitment to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo during her time in the interim role.
“Over the past 18 months, Lisa has demonstrated strong, steady leadership and a deep commitment to Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo,” Bowman said in a release, adding the organization is well-positioned to continue advancing economic and tourism development in the region.
Board chair Terry Cooper said the decision reflected both Sweet’s experience and her connection to the community.
“Throughout this process, it became clear that Lisa not only understands this organization, but truly cares about the region it serves,” Cooper said, noting her institutional knowledge, relationships and strategic vision.
Sweet said she is honoured to take on the permanent role and highlighted the work of the organization’s staff and partners.
“It is an honour to continue serving Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo in this capacity,” she said in the release. “I am incredibly proud of the talented and dedicated team at FMWBEDT who work every day to support businesses, attract investment, and strengthen our visitor economy.”
The board said it expects continued momentum as the organization enters its next strategic planning cycle, with a focus on building a strong and competitive regional economy.
