EDMONTON — Alberta’s government says more residents are gaining access to primary care as the province launches a new online tool aimed at helping people connect with doctors and other providers more quickly.
The province and Primary Care Alberta have introduced Alberta Find a Provider, a redesigned website intended to help Albertans locate nearby family physicians, nurse practitioners, registered midwives and clinics accepting new patients.
Officials say more than 800 primary care providers are currently listed as taking new patients through the site.
The launch comes one year after the creation of Primary Care Alberta, which the government says was designed to strengthen access to community based care. Provincial data show 6,362 family physicians were registered in Alberta as of the end of 2025, along with 1,137 licensed nurse practitioners, both record highs.
The new website replaces Alberta Find a Doctor and includes expanded search features intended to make it easier for users to find care close to home.
The government says new funding models for family physicians and a nurse practitioner primary care program are intended to attract more providers into community practices and improve access across the province.
Albertans will also be able to track health system progress through new primary care indicators added to the provincial health dashboard, including measures such as patient attachment to providers, screening rates and follow up care after hospital discharge.
According to the province, about 84 per cent of adult Albertans report having a regular health care provider, among the highest rates in Canada.
