FORT McMURRAY, Alta. — Wood Buffalo RCMP are advising motorists to avoid travel as poor weather creates hazardous driving conditions across Fort McMurray and surrounding highways.
Police say high winds, blowing snow and icy roads have led to reduced visibility and dangerous surfaces. Officers have received reports of stranded motorists and abandoned vehicles in roadways.
Drivers who must travel are urged to slow down, increase following distance and ensure vehicles are winter ready, including proper tires and functioning lights. Police also recommend carrying an emergency kit with extra clothing, food, water and a cellphone charger.
Motorists are encouraged to check Alberta 511 for updated road conditions before heading out.
