FORT McMURRAY — Albertans can head out onto the ice this weekend without purchasing a sportfishing licence as part of the province’s Family Fishing Weekend.
The free fishing opportunity runs Feb. 14 to 16, coinciding with the Family Day long weekend. A second Family Fishing Weekend is scheduled for July 11 and 12.
The initiative, hosted by the Province of Alberta, encourages residents and visitors to try fishing on waterbodies with open seasons while spending time outdoors with family and friends.
While a sportfishing licence is not required during the designated weekends, provincial fishing regulations remain in effect. Officials note anglers using a Special Harvest Licence, including a walleye tag, must still purchase a sportfishing licence.
Alberta hosts two Family Fishing Weekends each year, one in February over the Family Day long weekend and another in July on the second Saturday and Sunday of the month, unless July 1 falls on a weekend.
The province says the program aims to connect people with Alberta’s lakes, rivers and streams while promoting responsible angling practices, whether dropping a line through the ice or fishing open water in summer.
