When long-time staple of Fort McMurray, Mitchell’s Café, announced that the doors would be closing at the end of September, the response was enormous. The theories and social-media-comment-section-BS began to swirl as well. Certainly everyone who had stepped through those doors for sunshine bread sandwiches, heartwarming soup, fine coffee, or inventive baked goodies were wondering why! As it turns out, the reason is far more simple than all the curiosity. Local media firm, Hexwave Media, sat down for an interview with one of the owners, Owen Erskine, to ask all the burning questions and to find out about what’s next. All the answers are in the video above.
Ripping the band-aid off: there will never be another Mitchell’s. But there is an opportunity for another spot to cement itself as a Fort McMurray institution and a destination to bring visitors to the region for a true taste of our northern hospitality.
Like so many, I have my own lengthy history and connection with the Café – situated in one of the oldest still-standing buildings in the downtown area: a repurposed RCMP detachment. The memories are many. It will be missed, but we’re thankful for all of the soul food and stellar service through the years. Thanks to Owen and the entire staff, especially for toughing out such crazily-paced final days – each with a line out the door from the moment it opened.
