Alberta Jobs Strategy focuses on career readiness, barriers and employer partnerships
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Alberta’s new jobs strategy could have major implications for northern communities like Fort McMurray, where the oilsands and Indigenous partnerships play a central role in the economy.
The province unveiled its Alberta Jobs Strategy this week, describing it as a blueprint for training, education and workforce growth. It brings nearly 50 government programs under one umbrella, including Indigenous Relations’ Employment Partnerships Program, which connects Indigenous people to employment projects, and initiatives to expand literacy and English-language skills.
For Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region, officials say the plan could help address labour shortages in health care and the trades, while also supporting growing populations and diverse workforces in the oilsands hub.
The strategy is built on four pillars: career awareness, career readiness, removing barriers and employer focus. Provincial officials say the plan is meant to align training with industry needs and ensure employers in sectors from energy to health care can connect with skilled workers.
