CALGARY — Suncor Energy more than doubled its third-quarter profit to $3.814 billion in 2026, compared with $1.619 billion a year earlier, as higher oil prices and stronger refining margins helped deliver record financial results.
The Calgary-based energy company reported net earnings of $3.27 per share for the three months ending Sept. 30, compared with $1.34 per share during the same period in 2025.
Higher crude oil prices were a major contributor. West Texas Intermediate averaged US$85.70 per barrel during the quarter, compared with US$64.95 a year earlier.
Suncor also reported record adjusted operating earnings of $4.631 billion, up from $1.794 billion in 2025.
“The third quarter was highlighted by record adjusted funds from operations and the ingenuity of our teams, who continue to find new ways to create value through our unparalleled integration, most recently by sustaining Edmonton refinery throughput during a turnaround,” said Suncor CEO Rich Kruger.
The company generated record adjusted funds from operations of $6.705 billion, compared with $3.831 billion a year earlier, while free funds flow more than doubled to $5.196 billion.
The financial gains came despite a modest decline in production.
Total upstream production averaged 852,500 barrels per day, compared with 870,000 barrels during the third quarter of 2025.
Oilsands bitumen production declined slightly to 948,000 barrels per day, primarily because of increased maintenance activity at Syncrude. However, Firebag achieved record third-quarter production, while upgrader utilization at Oil Sands Base reached a third-quarter record of 107 per cent.
Operating costs also increased, particularly at Syncrude, where costs climbed to $43.35 per barrel from $31.45 a year earlier.
Suncor’s refining and marketing business delivered particularly strong results, with adjusted operating earnings rising to $3.225 billion from $894 million, supported by higher refining margins and increased export sales.
Refined product sales reached a third-quarter record of 676,900 barrels per day.
The company’s financial position also strengthened considerably.
Suncor finished September with $8.001 billion in cash and cash equivalents, while net debt fell to $1.751 billion from $7.147 billion a year earlier.
The strong results prompted Suncor to increase its quarterly dividend by 10 per cent to 66 cents per share.
The company also increased planned monthly share repurchases from $500 million to $750 million, projecting total share buybacks of $5.5 billion for 2026.
“Our confidence in the continued earnings power and resiliency of our business has allowed us to increase our dividend and our monthly share repurchases, while also returning tremendous value to Canadians with significantly higher royalty payments and income taxes,” Kruger said.
Suncor reported $3.518 billion in current income tax and royalty expenses during the quarter, predominantly attributable to Canada.
Looking ahead, the company maintained its planned 2026 capital spending program of between $5.6 billion and $5.8 billion.
Third-quarter capital expenditures totalled $1.468 billion, with investments including continued development of the North Pit at Fort Hills, additional in-situ production capacity and the Mildred Lake Mine Extension East project.
Work is also progressing on converting Syncrude’s mining operations to autonomous haul trucks.
While Suncor has not released a formal 2027 capital budget, the report points to continued investment in oilsands development, equipment upgrades and production capacity.
The company also announced an agreement to sell its interests in the Terra Nova, White Rose and West White Rose offshore oil projects for $1.2 billion, with a potential additional payment of up to $350 million depending on future oil prices.
The sale, expected to close in early 2027, would also transfer significant future investment commitments and liabilities to the purchaser.
Suncor left its previously updated 2026 production and operating guidance unchanged, expressing confidence in its ability to fund planned investments while maintaining a strong financial position.
