CALGARY — As the weather cools down, the Better Business Bureau is warning Albertans about furnace scams targeting homeowners.
BBB Serving Alberta and East Kootenay says it receives reports every year from homeowners who have been contacted by phone or at their door by someone offering a free furnace inspection.
“We warn consumers about this scam because every year without exception we receive reports from homeowners that they have been contacted by telephone or at their front door by someone offering to do a ‘free’ inspection of their furnace,” BBB president and CEO Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen said.
The organization says homeowners should be cautious about allowing unexpected visitors into their homes and should verify the identity and credentials of anyone offering furnace or heating services.
“These individuals are out to make a quick buck from unsuspecting homeowners,” O’Sullivan-Andersen said. “Do not let anyone into your home who has not been properly identified.”
BBB recommends researching a company’s background and licensing before hiring it, checking warranty coverage and reviewing customer feedback.
