EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean are touting the groundbreaking of the $2.9-billion Yellowhead Pipeline as a major expansion of the province’s natural gas infrastructure.
The project will add more than one billion cubic feet per day of natural gas transportation capacity and include construction of 235 kilometres of pipeline and associated facilities.
The province says construction is expected to support about 2,000 jobs.
Once complete, the pipeline is expected to provide additional natural gas capacity for Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and support industries including petrochemicals, manufacturing, hydrogen, data centres and power generation.
“Today’s groundbreaking marks an important milestone for the Yellowhead Pipeline and another step toward securing Alberta’s economic prosperity and energy future,” Smith said.
The government says the project could enable about $20 billion in additional investment in Alberta, including Dow’s Fort Saskatchewan Path2Zero project.
Smith said expanded natural gas infrastructure will help support industrial development, economic activity and investment.
Jean said the project reflects continued investor confidence in Alberta and credited Canadian Utilities, ATCO, project partners, Indigenous communities, municipalities, landowners and other stakeholders for their involvement.
“This investment reinforces that Alberta is the best place in Canada to invest, build and do business,” Jean said.
The province says it will continue supporting infrastructure projects aimed at creating jobs and expanding economic activity.
