FORT MCMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Regional Emergency Services are marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks today with their annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial.
The public ceremony will be held at Fire Hall 5, located at 200 Saprae Creek Trail on Airport Road.
Members of the Fort McMurray Honour Guard and Fort McMurray Fire Department will pay tribute to firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
The ceremony comes 25 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States.
Nineteen al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft that morning. Two were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, while a third struck the Pentagon. A fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew members fought back.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, including 343 members of the New York City Fire Department who died responding to the World Trade Center.
Today’s ceremony will commemorate the courage, dedication and service of fallen firefighters while also recognizing those who continue to serve the community.
Seating begins at 10 a.m., with the ceremony getting underway at 10:30 a.m.
Light refreshments will be available following the service.
