FORT MCMURRAY — A Fort McMurray food delivery driver has been charged with sexual assault following an investigation into allegations involving a delivery to a local residence.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say they received a report May 16 from a resident who alleged they were sexually assaulted after answering the door to receive a food delivery.
Police say the suspect was not immediately identified.
Investigators collected witness statements, reviewed surveillance footage and conducted additional investigative work before identifying a suspect.
RCMP located and arrested a 34-year-old Fort McMurray man without incident Sept. 5.
Deepak Kumar has been charged with sexual assault.
He was held for a judicial interim release hearing and later released on conditions.
Kumar is scheduled to appear in court in Fort McMurray on Sept. 23.
RCMP say no further details are being released because the matter is before the courts.
Staff Sgt. Sabrina Clayton, acting operations support officer with Wood Buffalo RCMP, says police believe the incident was isolated but are encouraging residents to remain aware of their personal safety.
“We recognize incidents of this nature can be concerning for members of the community,” Clayton said. “While this appears to be an isolated incident, we encourage residents to remain aware of their personal safety and to report any suspicious or concerning behaviour.”
Police are recommending residents verify delivery information before opening their doors and use peepholes, doorbell cameras or other methods to identify visitors. Residents can also request contactless delivery or meet delivery drivers outside.
Anyone who may have experienced a similar incident or has information related to the investigation is asked to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4000.
The allegation has not been proven in court.
