FORT McMURRAY — More than 100 sensory-friendly backpacks are heading to the Autism Society of Wood Buffalo as part of a back-to-school initiative involving Suncor employees.
Suncor says volunteers with its SunCares program prepared 116 sensory-friendly backpacks in Fort McMurray to help students return to the classroom.
The local effort was part of a broader initiative involving employee volunteers across several of the company’s operating areas in Canada and the United States.
In Calgary, volunteers helped pack 2,000 backpacks through EducationMatters’ Pack Hope Backpack Challenge, while employees in St. John’s supported 1,000 students through the Bridges to Hope Bag to School program.
Volunteers in Sarnia assembled 352 backpacks for local children through The Inn of the Good Shepherd.
Suncor employees in Montreal helped distribute backpacks, lunch kits and school supplies through Action Secours Vie d’Espoir’s Operation Backpack.
In Commerce City, Colo., volunteers worked with Kenzi’s Causes to fill backpacks with school supplies.
Suncor says the initiatives are intended to help students and families begin the new school year with the supplies they need.
