FORT MCMURRAY — Wood Buffalo will celebrate reading, literacy and storytelling during its first Read Across Wood Buffalo Day on Sept. 25.
The community-wide initiative is being held as part of Alberta Culture Days and will carry the theme “Many Stories. Shared Humanity.”
Schools, libraries, bookstores, social service agencies, businesses, families and other residents are invited to organize activities highlighting diverse stories and experiences from across the region.
Activities could include author or musician visits, public readings, storytelling events, book donations and exchanges, or children dressing as their favourite literary characters. Participants will be responsible for organizing their own activities.
Organizers say the day is intended to demonstrate how reading can strengthen community connections, expand the understanding of literacy and support people facing literacy challenges.
Poet and musician Shaylean Gladu has been named the inaugural Read Across Wood Buffalo Day ambassador.
Gladu is a member-at-large on the Writers’ Guild of Alberta board of directors and an advocate for literacy as a tool for personal and social change.
“Read Across Wood Buffalo Day is a movement to create a space for the immersive experience of reading, for community members to feel that they belong and that their stories matter,” Gladu said.
The initiative is led by local author Juleus Ghunta and supported through a grant from Arts Council Wood Buffalo’s Alberta Culture Days fund.
Other participating organizations include the Wood Buffalo Regional Library, Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Northern Canada Collective Society for Writers, Fort McMurray Buttons and Writers’ Guild of Alberta.
