FORT McMURRAY — Nearly 100 small-breed dogs have been rescued from a home in Gregoire following the execution of a search warrant.
Bylaw Services says officers entered the home on Aug. 25 under a warrant obtained through Alberta’s Animal Protection Act.
All 97 dogs were removed and placed in the care of the Fort McMurray SPCA.
The investigation remains underway, and charges are pending against the person who was at the home when the animals were found.
“This was one of the largest dog rescues we’ve ever done,” said Bylaw Services manager Aaron Anderson.
Anderson thanked the bylaw officers who rescued and transported the dogs, the SPCA team that assisted with the animals and Wood Buffalo RCMP members who helped execute the warrant.
“All 97 dogs are now safe and receiving the care they need from the Fort McMurray SPCA,” he said.
Each dog will require a veterinary examination, vaccinations and spaying or neutering before becoming available for adoption. The process is expected to take weeks and, in some cases, months.
The SPCA is not accepting adoption applications for the dogs at this time.
“We will share updates at Fort McMurray SPCA Facebook page as they become ready for adoption,” said executive director Melanie Schneider.
People interested in helping can volunteer at the shelter, become foster caregivers or make donations toward veterinary treatment and specialized food.

Bylaw Services is also encouraging anyone struggling to care for a dog or cat to seek help with rehoming or surrendering the animal before its welfare is put at risk.
