EDMONTON — More than 5,000 people are expected in Edmonton next month for a national carbon capture convention taking place as governments and industry prepare for further decisions on the Pathways project.
Carbon Capture Canada 2026 will run from Sept. 15 to Sept. 17 at the Edmonton Convention Centre.
Organizer dmg events says more than 100 exhibiting companies and representatives from over 50 countries are expected to attend the fifth annual convention, which is focused on carbon capture, utilization and storage.
The event follows a July 2 memorandum of understanding between Canada, Alberta and the Oil Sands Alliance concerning the Pathways carbon capture project.
Dmg events says definitive agreements on the project are expected this fall, placing the convention between the initial agreement and the next stage of commercial and investment decisions.
“The timing of this year’s convention could not be better,” dmg events senior vice-president Nick Samain said in a release.
“We’re meeting in September, directly between July’s Pathways MOU and the definitive decisions expected this fall.”
The conference will include more than 150 speakers from government, industry and academia.
Scheduled speakers include Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, Natural Resources Canada assistant deputy minister Frank Des Rosiers, Oil Sands Alliance president Kendall Dilling, Deep Sky chief executive Alex Petre and Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation chief executive Chana Martineau.
Purnomo Yusgiantoro, special adviser on energy to the president of Indonesia, is also scheduled to participate.
Sessions will examine carbon markets, infrastructure, project financing, technology commercialization, direct-air capture, industrial decarbonization and Canada’s position in the global energy transition.
The event will also include a trade exhibition featuring technology, products and services from across the carbon capture sector.
“The conditions for investment are lining up, but nothing is predetermined,” Samain said.
“That’s what makes this year’s convention matter. The industry is gathering to work through the commercial, policy and partnership questions that decide what happens next.”
